The State of Email Security in the UK – 2020

Mimecast Email Security Report 2020

For any business owner who has concerns about the security of their business IT set-up, this latest infographic from Mimecast will be of interest.

Companies seeing their senior personnel impersonated in Phishing emails has increased by 50%. And 52% of respondents said that they’ve also been on the receiving end of spoofing emails from high profile brands.

Key findings in the UK from the previous 12 months.

Technology provides opportunities – good and bad

Today’s digital technologies are transforming the way we work for the better. And in recent times, IT has allowed businesses to continue to operate and thrive remotely. The downside is that our reliance on email has provided hackers with more opportunities to steal our data and intellectual property. Which is especially worrying, given that hackers are now increasingly targeting businesses instead of individual users. And the driver is that business data is usually more valuable.

New call-to-action

Email security is essential

At Dr Logic we have seen an increase in this activity, with clients receiving emails, cold calls and texts. This is often under the guise of being from HMRC or relating to benefits. But spoofed email addresses requesting urgent payment of an invoice are also common. Some of these can look very convincing, especially if they’re from an internal email address.

91% of organisations in the survey felt that this trend for external attacks by spoofing was going to stay at current levels or increase. In addition, more than 50% had suffered from a Ransomeware attack which resulted in downtime for the company.

No need to panic!

Some of the stats might sound alarming but with good IT support in place, many risks can be mitigated. In the meantime, one of the key things you can do is to educate staff about what to look out for. You can read more about Phishing here.

And, to protect your business from ransomware attacks a robust backup system will remove the immediate worry of losing valuable data to the hackers.

The right IT support

It’s important to work with an IT Support company who’ll ensure that your business is one step ahead of the cybercriminals. They should be constantly scanning the market for the latest, security products. And always on the lookout for emerging threats and vulnerabilities. They can also work with you on an education programme to raise staff awareness of how to protect against scams.

The infographic below demonstrates why this is becoming increasingly vital.
