Columns approached Dr Logic in the Summer of 2016. They were looking for Mac IT specialists who would be capable of supporting their studio and large team.
After initial meetings, an action plan was agreed and prioritised; to improve and upgrade three key areas: the in-house server, the internet connection and mail hosting.
The majority of our clients rely on servers to store the bulk of company data, and Columns is no different.
The immediate priority was to address and upgrade the server and backup, to keep it running effectively with a mixed Mac and PC environment. For this, we chose a reliable Synology solution, including on-site and off-site backups for disaster recovery and security.
The Synology setup works equally as well with both the PCs and Macs in the studio. This gives all departments stable access throughout the day. It also allows file-sharing with clients, ensuring security and speed when sharing files outside of the company.
Waiting on slow internet connection when running up against deadlines wasn’t an option. To improve the speed of the leased line, we managed through a change of provider, enabling Columns to save money whilst doubling their connection speed. This has increased the capacity for file sharing, speed of backups and helps to keep their growing team running efficiently.
Finally, earlier in 2017, we migrated Columns to Microsoft 365 from an older on-site Mail server. This enables us to manage and administer emails and office licensing centrally, while integration with Mimecast allows for improved continuity in cases of (rare) downtime.
Our team enjoy working with Columns, not least because they understand the importance of investing in their IT to keep their business competitive.
